Manassas Next - Housing

Manassas Next focuses on our housing stock as the third pillar in supporting our move forward.  Manassas is currently facing, like many surrounding jurisdictions, an acute oversupply of available homes. Our longer-term problem that we face is an aging housing stock.

The first and most pressing problem that we have to deal with is an acute oversupply of homes on the market. This is largely due to the fallout from the sub-prime loan markets. That part, at least, is no mystery. The challenge is how to deal with this. In Manassas we have something called the Manassas Housing Trust Fund (MHTF). The MHTF helps people make down payments on their first homes. The problem is currently available to most income-qualified people in the City. What is propose is to use a facility like the MHTF to help fund workforce housing for City Employees. I believe that the City should make available to the MHTF (or some similar body) $1 million dollars in credit to help city employees place down payments on their first homes.

Action Items

1. Develop and execute housing program

2. Begin process to examine redevelopment in older neighborhoods
